CACHANILLA MENOS
2009 / FONT DESIGN / MENTOR: LEAH HOFFMITZ
The name Cachanilla comes from a plant native to Mexicali, Mexico, my home town. People from Mexicali are often referred to as “Cachanillas.” “Menos” translates to minus, without, or in typography terms, sans. The typeface Cachanilla Menos is composed of three different typefaces, and so is the culture of Mexicali. Mexicali is a combination of three different cultures: Mexican, American, and Chinese.
Cachanilla Menos is a flexible family of sans serifs for editorial and identity design. Its a single weight, evenly proportioned typeface with slight optical corrections that make it pleasing to the eye. I designed it for myself, frankensteining three typesfaces together by taking characteristics I admire from each. The three influences were: Trade Gothic, because its the most flexible of the gothics, Din Pro, for its glyphs and numerals, and Gridnik, because its design is grid–based, which gives the typeface a modern typewriter look.
